“Intercultural analysis of wars: forgotten element in international debates” with Dr. Joanna Siekiera
The webinar explores the often-overlooked role of cultural perspectives in the understanding and analysis of warfare. It argues that traditional international relations discourse frequently prioritizes political, economic, and military factors, neglecting the profound influence of cultural narratives, identities, and thus legal values of the parties in any conflict dynamics. By employing a multidisciplinary approach that integrates insights from anthropology, sociology, and conflict studies, one can comprehend how cultural contexts shape perceptions of legitimacy, justice, and morality in warfare. Through case studies from various historical and contemporary conflicts, the presentation advocates that an intercultural lens can unveil underlying motivations and facilitate more effective conflict resolution strategies.
Ultimately, Dr. Siekiera calls for a re-evaluation of current international debates to incorporate intercultural analysis, while not only strictly military one, thereby enriching understanding of global conflicts and fostering more inclusive and effective diplomatic practices.
BIO:
Dr. Joanna Siekiera is an expert in international law and the Indo-Pacific region, a NATO consultant and educator in legal warfare (lawfare), legal culture in armed conflict. She is a fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington. She supports various military institutions as a legal subject matter expert.
Dr. Siekiera has written more than one hundred scientific publications in several languages, the book Regional Policy in the South Pacific and edited thirteen monographs on international law, international relations, and security.
Dr. Siekiera conducted her postdoctoral research on the legal consequences of ocean change in Oceania at the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen, Norway. She did her PhD studies in Pacific regionalism at the Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. She speaks eight languages and is currently learning Spanish.
