3 days hybrid – International Congress in Montpellier organised by SIETAR France in collaboration with Université Montpellier 3.
“The field of intercultural negotiation has gained increasing importance as global travel intensifies and teams are ever more diversified. The acceleration of trade boosted by new communication and translation tools, far from rendering intercultural skills obsolete, transform relationships and reshape the issues at stake. Tales of expatriation and foreign investment continue to emphasize the importance of understanding local context, corporate cultures, communication styles, and the political and social history of the region.
Higher education in language studies in France generally includes the term “civilization” (the “C” of LLCER). It is meant to highlight the importance of a broad understanding of the history, literature, and representations to properly learn a foreign language. Programs in applied foreign
languages (LEA) maintain these civilizational teachings and incorporate specific intercultural modules as analytical tools for understanding the worlds revealed through the study of two foreign languages. At Paul Valéry University Montpellier 3, intercultural negotiation is at the
heart of the Master’s program in International Project Negotiation (NPI), which is co-organizing the conference with SIETAR (the Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research).
The aim of this international conference is to discuss and highlight, through presentations,
workshops, and debates around intercultural negotiation, the intercultural sensitivity required for
any form of negotiation.
We encourage presentations that address, but are not limited to, the evolution of intercultural negotiation theories, their applications and criticisms, practical approaches in fields such as education, business, international governmental and non-governmental organizations, diplomacy, and conflict management.
Can misunderstandings due to cultural differences be identified and avoided? How should one prepare for and structure an intercultural negotiation?
How can the cultural issues underlying the negotiation be addressed?
These are some of the questions this conference hopes to address thanks to your contribution as a researcher, a consultant or a practitioner of this field. Please submit proposals for presentations on the issues, strategies, and new models of intercultural negotiation, whether in contexts thought of as monocultural or where cultural differences are well known and acknowledged.
