SIETAR Polska Monthly Webinar Series Session 1: Interculturality on the Silk Road — Lessons from the Tang Dynasty

What can 9th century interculturality teach us about today’s world?

Our first session explores one of history’s most remarkable examples of multicultural exchange – the Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty. We will focus on the Sogdians and other peoples who shaped this crossroads of civilizations, and examine how interculturality was lived, negotiated and expressed through textiles, laws, stories, art and trade.

The session will include:

— A map of the most important regions and trade routes

— An introduction to key peoples including the Sogdians

— Specific examples of how interculturality was expressed: textiles, writings, the Dunhuang Caves, money and currency exchange

— Reference to recent exhibitions including Musée Guimet 2025

— Key positive and challenging features of this intercultural encounter

— Audience participation: reactions, additional knowledge, ideas

— Discussion: how can aspects of Tang Dynasty interculturality inspire us today?

— A curated further reading list for those who want to explore more
