SIETAR Polska Monthly Webinar Series Session 3: Interculturality in the 14th Century — The World Through Ibn Battuta’s Eyes

What does the world’s most travelled medieval explorer teach us about intercultural encounter?

Our third session explores 14th century interculturality through the remarkable journals of Ibn Battuta — a Moroccan scholar who travelled over 120,000 kilometres across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, South and Southeast Asia, and China. His writings offer a unique window into how cultures met, traded, negotiated and coexisted across continents.

The session will include:

— A map of the most important regions and travel routes

— An introduction to key peoples and communities encountered

— Specific examples of how interculturality was expressed: textiles, writings and laws, the journals of Ibn Battuta, money and trade

— Reference to Cynthia Green’s article on Old Money

— Relevant exhibitions

— Key positive and challenging features of these intercultural encounters

— Audience participation: reactions, additional knowledge, ideas

Discussion: how can aspects of 14th century interculturality inspire us today?

— A curated further reading list for those who want to explore more
